Job Description:

FLSA Status: Exempt Earliest Start Date: Immediately Salary: Salary commensurate with experience. Hours per Week: 40.00 Standard from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
Hiring Department: Office of External Relations, Communications and Advancement Services Purpose of Position
Responsible for researching and composing executive communications, remarks, official presentations and testimony, suited to various audiences and platforms, on a broad range of thought leadership issues in higher education and health, on behalf of the UT System.

Essential Functions:

  • Prepare draft speeches, constituency communications, opinion pieces, testimony and other collateral materials as requested.
  • Conduct research and engage in extensive fact-finding, historical background, and information-gathering efforts to ensure accuracy in work and impact of narrative.
  • Generate ideas and provide recommendations to System leadership on topical issues of state and national importance, and prepare effective communications pieces for discussions with a range of audiences including the general public, media, civic, philanthropic and business leaders, elected officials, and national thought leaders in higher education.
  • Collaborate with departments throughout the System Administration on the preparation of written material and in executing keynotes and messages for conferences, board meetings or other large-scale events requiring scripting, writing, and researching.
  • Engage in interviewing subjects, identifying key points, and distilling information in an engaging way for a variety of audiences.
  • Provide writing assistance and contribute to high-quality content for use in various UT System publications, social media and other channels that represent the UT System’s perspectives and thoughts on the UT System’s commitment to education, health care, research and service.
  • Curate and maintain organization of documents produced, for easy access when needed by others.

Working Conditions:

  • May work around standard office conditions.

  • Requires occasional evening or weekend hours.
  • Most work is conducted in an office environment, with some flexibility.

Position reports to Vice Chancellor for External Relations, Communications, and Advancement Services and works directly with the Chancellor, executive offices, and colleagues throughout the UT System.

Candidate Qualifications:

Required Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree.

Minimum of seven years of experience in writing and publishing creative works, or in strategic communications, speechwriting, journalism, or higher education, where official communications has been part of the applicant’s portfolio and publications.
