Job Description

The Communications & Media Relations Manager plays a key role in donor and marketing communications, storytelling and media relations. This position works across a variety of the Agency’s programs and services and us instrumental to the success of the creation and execution of communications collateral and plans that support the Agency’s vision, culture, business plans, brand promotion and identity. Position translates these strategies into clear, consistent, and effective messaging for all internal and external Agency stakeholders.


Essential Duties
  • Serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) to develop and implement creative communications strategies to tell the Upbring story to maximize impact
  • Collaborate with executive team to develop and implement executive communications strategy including but not limited to writing announcements in their personal voice and editing documents in a timely manner, filtering and approving external requests for appearances, and acting as their key point of contact for media and other external constituencies
  • Serve as the primary writer on various projects; create straight forward compelling copy for web pages, fundraising and stewardship collateral, ads, video scripts, internal and external newsletters, press releases, sponsorship packets, event invitations, talking points, fact sheets, presentations, op-eds, social media posts, and acknowledgement letters; manage the quality of all copy deliverables and ensure they meet Agency and department standards.   • Develop earned media relations strategy, seeking high-level placements in print, broadcast and online media and all content marketing initiatives to drive traffic, engagement, and leads that increase awareness and donor retention. Inclusive of this strategy will be a spokesperson plan.
  • Collaborate with VP, Strategic Communications & Marketing to develop and implement a media training program for Agency Spokespeople
  • Develop, modify and execute organizational PR policies that affect specific operations and may also have agency-wide effects.
  • Generate new story ideas, PR campaigns and media and analyst leads
  • Collaborate with Senior leadership on thought leadership and mission/reputation management initiatives, including drafting op-eds, articles, blogs, speeches and talking points; facilitating speaking appearances; and arranging media interviews. Write and distribute pitch letters, press releases and other materials
  • Collaborate with Vice President of Strategic Communications & Marketing on crisis and reputation management efforts; anticipate and plan responses to evolving issues; serve as point person for press
  • Provide insights and suggestions to assist with the management of the expenses related to the media relations budget; manage external PR vendor relationship and contracts
  • Lead communications and cross-functional teams to develop communications strategy; ensure high quality projects are produced within budget, on time, and meets project expectations   

Working Relationships

  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with management, staff, vendors, donors, and other clients to ensure project needs and expectations are being met within project scope and meets the established deadline.
  • Participate in cross-training activities, cross-functional (department) sharing of knowledge, share expertise and knowledge with the Communications and Marketing teams and learn from others to expand knowledge.
  • Work as team player and exhibit professional behavior and a positive attitude with both internal and external clients, vendors, and donors that reflects positively on the Agency and is consistent with Agency policies and practices.

Candidate Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Journalism, or closely related field
  • 2 years’ experience in corporate communications, media relations, strategic communications, journalism or public relations; preferably in non-profit industry
  • 2 years’ experience managing and leading multiple projects with shifting deadlines simultaneously
  • 2 years’ experience planning, implementing and measuring long-term media and public relations strategies and strong pitching experience
  • 2 years’ experience with creating and managing press events in major markets
  • 2 years’ experience with digital and social media
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills to interact with internal clients and members of the press with confidence, develop an array of communications to various audiences, and influence the decision-making process.
  • Proven track record writing copy that can be repurposed for various channels and inspires action
  • Demonstrated experience managing comprehensive strategic communications programs to advance an organization’s mission and strategic goals and objectives
  • Demonstrated experience with writing digital engagement strategies, including new/emerging technologies and social media channels to support message delivery and measurement
  • Gifted storyteller and interviewer – ability to conduct and synthesize interviews and industry communications, to craft and refine a meaningful and appealing story
  • Strong relationship building skills and established positive relationships with Texas journalists
  • Demonstrated experience to self-edit writing material and proofread documents
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
  • Familiarity with media monitoring software; preferably Trendkite
  • Proficient with AP Style   

Preferred Qualifications

  • 4 years’ experience in corporate communications, journalism or public relations
  • Bilingual (English & Spanish) based on service population
  • On-camera experience.
  • Extensive Knowledge of Texas Legislature
  • Photography and video-editing experience
  • Positive relationships with national journalists
  • Positive Relationships with Influencer/Celebrity Press Agents
