The Teacher Retirement System of Texas is responsible for investing funds under its stewardship and for delivering benefits to members as authorized by the Texas Legislature. TRS is a defined benefit plan, with retirement benefits determined by a pre-established formula. The trust fund is sustained principally by three sources -- contributions by members during their working careers, contributions by the state and investment revenues.

TRS was founded over 80 years ago. With assets at $167 billion, the Trust is the largest public retirement system in Texas in both membership and assets. It is the sixth largest public pension plan in the U.S. and is among the 20th largest in the world. The agency serves more than 1.6 million people. Over 1 million are public and higher education members and over 400,000 are retirement recipients and beneficiaries.

Job Description:

The Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), one of the largest public pension funds in the world, provides pension and health care benefits to Texas public education employees. We are passionate about serving those who contribute to the education of all generations. We are looking to add an expert digital communications professional to our in-house team, who will be committed to serving our ever-growing membership of 1.6 million members. As digital communications specialist, you’ll work closely with our IT Department to ensure that content on our website and in member publications is as engaging and easy-to-understand as possible. As part of the TRS Communications Department, you’ll join a dynamic team that sets high standards, encourages professional growth and fosters camaraderie in a supportive environment.

What You Will Do:

  • Graphic Design Development
    • Designs and produces marketing materials using computer-based and traditional methods to meet agency standards and deadlines.
    • Develops layouts for publications, posters, brochures, informational cards, invitations, postcards, web content and other marketing materials.
    • Ensures key messages and visuals are delivered in a consistent manner and are reflective of the TRS brand, mission, and goals.
    • Collaborates with staff and management to generate ideas, determine project requirements, and achieve final product goals.
    • Reviews creative work with staff and/or management to get feedback on direction and to ensure work is aligned with marketing objectives.
    • Ensures all work produced is branded properly and meets highest quality standards.• Reviews and incorporates recommended changes into final designs.
    • Serves as backup to the Lead Graphic Designer.
  • Digital Content Development
    • Writes material for the external website/intranet and removes, archives or revises content to maintain focus on the topics of highest audience interest.
    • Proofreads and edits contributors’ written copy for style, tone of voice, and grammar.
    • Ensures published content is mobile friendly, jargon-free, and meets ADA accessibility standards.
    • Develops and manages digital dashboards to track communication performance metrics, as required.• Monitors visitor behavior by reviewing website analytics and providing meaningful metrics to the organization.
    • Collaborates with IT and provides input on future updates and changes to messaging and user experience design.
    • Generates infographics/graphics as needed for web and social media.
    • Works closely with staff videographer/photographer to secure images that capture the TRS brand and related sub-brands.
  • Overall Communications Support
    • Edits and proofreads content for publications and marketing collateral.
    • Assists with photography as needed.
    • Provides support during TRS Board Meetings.
    • Represents TRS at internal and external events.
    • Identifies communications-related award opportunities.
    • Helps prepare awards submissions. Performs related work as assigned
Candidate Qualities:

Knowledge of:

  • Web content management systems such as SharePoint.• UX website design. • ADA accessibility standards.• Analytics software such as Google Analytics.
  • Skill in:
    • Verbal and written communications, including preparing and delivering clear and concise correspondence, reports and presentations.
    • Planning, organizing and prioritizing work assignments to manage a high-volume workload in a fast-paced and changing environment, and in completing detailed work with a high degree of accuracy.• Utilizing a personal computer in a Windows environment with word processing, spreadsheet, database, desktop publishing, graphics design and presentation software, particularly Microsoft PowerPoint and SharePoint.
    • Providing quality customer service.
  • Ability to:
    • Establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with co-workers, agency staff and external contacts, and to work effectively in a professional team environment.
    • Analyze and interpret agency policies and local, state, and federal laws related to communications, public information, and media relations.
    • Research, prepare and direct information effectively.
    • Accurately interpret and translate agency programs and research into public information.
    • Guide contributors to create accessible, quality content that is user-centric.
Candidate Qualifications:

Required Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • High school diploma or equivalent and additional full-time experience in journalism, public relations, communications, video production, website design/content management, or a related field may substitute for the required education on an equivalent year-for-year basis.

Required Experience:

  • Three (3) years of full-time experience in journalism, public relations, communications, video production, website design/content management, or a related field.
  • Progressively responsible experience in digital content creation, with a focus on writing for mobile platforms.
