Job Description:

The Media Relations Writer/Editor will support proactive media relations efforts, prepare executive-level communications, and assist with collaborative and creative projects on behalf of the UT System Administration. Essential Functions

  • Prepare a variety of written content, including official statements, news releases, reports, briefings, op-eds, and media pitches.
  • Identify opportunities and pitch placements in mainstream and trade publications.
  • Cultivate and strengthen working relationships with local, state and national media organizations.• Assist in preparing and distributing the daily media report.
  • Manage assigned writing projects from inception through delivery on behalf of UT System offices and executive leaders for internal and external audiences. Examples include written correspondence, web content and e-communications.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Exceptional writing, editing and proofreading skills.
  • Exceptional news judgement and understanding of national, regional and local media environments.
  • Extensive contacts within the media industry and/or experience working with members of the media.
  • Proven track record of content placements in state, national and trade publications.
  • Ability to produce engaging content for a variety of audiences and media.
  • Ability to quickly and effectively gather information via interviews, database research, etc.
  • Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize and manage complex tasks, and work independently and under pressure.

May work around standard office conditions. Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. Candidate Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 5+ years of professional experience in business or nonprofit communications, journalism or related field.Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior professional/media relations experience with an agency or in corporate, higher education, health or nonprofit sector.
  • Experience using media monitoring platforms such as Meltwater or Cision.
  • Experience managing the delivery of communications through Blackbaud’s NetCommunity and/or other similar technology mediums.
  • Experience using Drupal or other content management systems.
