Job Description

The Communications Associate assists the Communications Director with Texas Appleseed's external communications needs — social media, contact information for reporters, and more.
Roles & Responsibilities
  • Assist communications director and project directors on communications activities
  • Maintain local, state and national media lists (Note: We do not have access to a media software database)
  • Develop monthly news coverage reports using Google Alerts> Monitor local, state, and national news stories, and help identify relevant news opportunities
  • Serve as an additional editor for Texas Appleseed publications, web copy and other documents
  • Communications writing (including website writing, newsletters, blog posts, social media posts, press releases/advisories, and infographics)
  • Interact with journalists, our partners, board members, and other groups> Assist with media-related events, as well as special events
  • Offer ideas to elevate our work (e.g., new marketing tools, ways to incorporate storytelling into our work, etc.)
  • Creative concepting for public relations and advertising campaigns

Candidate Qualifications

  • A commitment to social and economic justice and a passion for communications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Advertising, Marketing or other related field
  • At least one year of professional experience in one of the above fields
  • Adept at writing, including press releases, blogs, infographics, newsletters, human interest stories, and posts for various social media platforms (Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn)
  • Strong editing skills, including knowledge of the Associated Press (AP) Stylebook
  • Detail-oriented and highly organized with strong time-management skills
  • Strong familiarity with digital communications and social media
  • Strong oral communications skills and ability to interact with diverse constituencies, including people affected by our work, community partners, board members, journalists, etc.
  • Strong interpersonal skills> Ability to prioritize tasks and easily work across various issue areas and projects
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Some travel to other Texas cities for board meetings and special eventsBONUS SKILLS
  • Video editing expertise, particularly Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere or iMovie> Photography skills
  • Google AdWords knowledge> Fluency in SpanishADDITIONAL DETAILS> Reports to Communications Director
  • This is a part-time, salaried position: 15-20 hours a week spanning a minimum of three days at the Texas Appleseed office
  • Texas Appleseed’s office hours are from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. each weekday.
