MEET PRSA AUSTIN CHAPTER MEMBER: Kelly Cripe

What do you currently do for a living? I am the Director of Media Relations for the Texas Lottery. Last year, the Texas Lottery achieved more than $5 billion in sales and made its largest contributions to Texas public schools and veterans, its two primary beneficiaries. I manage the media relations team and oversee traditional and social media activities for the Lottery. In this role, I have had the opportunity to serve as the national media contact for the largest Mega Millions jackpot in history and last year’s world record $1.6 billion Powerball jackpot.

Prior to joining the Texas Lottery in 2012, I held public relations positions with Fortune 500 companies in the airline and energy industries and was a media spokesperson for a political campaign and a nuclear power facility.

What motivated you to pursue a career in communications?  I have always gravitated toward writing and public speaking and knew I would have a career in some form of communications. I enjoy that no two days are the same in this profession.

What was your first job in PR/communications? My first job in communications was as a tape editor and news producer for a local network affiliate.

Where are you from? Where have you lived? I was born and raised in Houston. I graduated from The University of Texas and this is the second time I have lived in Austin.

How has PRSA Austin contributed to your development as a public relations professional? PRSA provides invaluable continuing education opportunities and the ability to stay connected to other public relations professionals.

What are your favorite things to do in Austin? Favorite places to visit? Favorite restaurants? I enjoy seeing Texas country music artists perform at Austin’s amazing music venues. My favorite restaurant is any restaurant with a good vegan menu.

What publication/book/blog do you recommend others read (professionally or personally)? Drudge Report

What do you do in your free time? What are your hobbies/interests outside of work? I am active in The Junior League of Austin and am a writer for Capitalines, The League’s official publication. I have three rescued dogs and two rescued cats and am an advocate for animal causes.

What is your most memorable experience as a PRSA member? Winning an Excalibur award for Grass Roots Program/Guerilla Marketing.

Fill in the blank: My favorite thing about PRSA Austin is connecting with fellow communicators.
